Waterford Institute of Technology Sept 1998 - June 1999 City & Guilds Photography Course. This was a part time (half-day a week) course in photography. My interest in photography started when I first started college in 1987, but I never got to take it seriously. I'm had a lot of fun with this course and it went well. A side of me that doesn't get out much, is got out to play. The five modules I chose were Art of Black & White Photography (Credit), Art of Colour Photography (Credit), Portraiture (Distinction), Still Life Photography (Distinction), and Constructed Images (Distinction) (see some of my photographs) |

University College Cork 1991 - 1996 Masters in Computer Science by research I worked on my masters at UCC from when I graduated with my primary degree in 1991 up until 1996. It took such a long time because I took a few detours. I studied in the US for one year and went to work, before finally coming back to finish off the thesis. I eventually graduated in 1996. My thesis was on "Block matching algorithms for motion compensated video compression". I investigated some of the techniques used in video compression schemes such as MPEG. I compared various block matching algorithms from the literature, and some of my own, using three different video sequences. There is more about my masters at the Video Compression web site based on my thesis. |

University of California at Berkeley Aug 1992 - May 1993 I studied at Berkeley for two semesters on the Education Abroad Program. In the first semester I studied multimedia, technical communication for engineers, and the social and economic aspects of computing. Adjusting to Berkeley and the American way of doing things was as interesting a challange as any of the classes I took. In the second semester I didn't take any computing courses and spent much of my time in the library researching my thesis. I took a film course, an intensive German course, weight training, and swimming. Berkeley was the most mind expanding experience of my entire life. If I ever went back to study there again, I don't think I'd ever leave. |

University College Cork Oct 1988 - Sep 1991 Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computer Science. In first year I studied Computer Science, Logic, Mathematics, and Mathematical Physics (applied math). In the subsequent years I studied assembly programming, operating systems, data structures, computer architecture and design, file processing, systems analysis, compiler theory, automata theory, database management systems. My minor subjects were mathmatics (graph theory, combinatorics) and statistics. I graduated with honours in 1991. |

Dublin City University Oct 1987 - Jun 1988 Year one of Communications Degree course. I studied photography, print graphics, radio, video, economics, psychology, research methods, culture, linguistics. Although I enjoyed this course I realised after a couple of months that it wasn't for me. I was more interested in media production than theory. There was no communications degree course that concentrated on production, in Ireland at that time. |
