Blue Tiles


Although azulejos come in a variey of colors, they are most commonly associated with blue. Towards the end of the17th Century the taste for multicolored tiles faded. Blue and white tiles became fashionable. This was a prosperous time in portugal and there was fierce demand for tiles. The nobles and the merchant class adorned the rooms, corridors, and gardens of the palaces and masions with azulejos. The fasion for blue and white tiles is belived to be the result of imports of Ming porcelain from China, which becan about this time.

The fashion for blue and white lasted until the mid-18th Century.
